experimental reflector irlp

I have experimental reflector and I would like to add it to my allstar node as I could do it?

IRLP was removed from AllStar some years ago at the request of Dave Kamron, the IRLP inventor. I’m sorry we can no longer support IRLP.

I think there is a bit of confusion with the bridge is not allowed access to the irlp general network but if Dave Cameron allowed access to experimental reflectors irlp in fact in the list of stats of allstar there are more than 50 with bridge to reflectors exp of irlp

The entire Win system is IRLP+ALLSTAR+ECHOLINK so seems there are lots of examples of this. Frankly if we could get IRLP back in the mainstream it would be useful.

There are several views here and you can find most of this in the archives.

I believe the issue is the IRLP network doesn’t want computer users and/or phones on the network like Echolink/Allstar. They want actual radios on both ends of a conversation. That is ok – their network, their rules.

So, to date the work arounds have been:
1) Dave Cameron is ok with connecting Allstar to a joint EchoIRLP reflector (that does Echolink and IRLP) because you as a user choose to connect to that reflector. Many of the Great Lakes Reflectors are designed with Allstar, Echolink and IRLP. It doesn’t work perfectly always.
2) You can use an EXP IRLP node number, again because endusers have to enable it on the IRLP network giving them the choice to connect to these or not.
In both examples the IRLP user must CONNECT to the system. Reflectors and EXP Nodes are not able to make outbound calls.

I too would LOVE to see an approval for IRLP added back in to Allstar, but it needs to somehow be secure to keep telephones, cellphone apps, IAX clients, Java clients, and non-radio users from not connecting when IRLP is active. As has been shown on EchoIRLP Dave Cameron is fine with connections to IRLP as long as they adhere to the rules.

The previous issue as I understand it is that Allstar users were connecting phones and other methods to IRLP – that is against those network rules.

Now, maybe someone can build a secure-irlp or something for the asterisk config files and add hooks that if IRLP is active, then Echolink connectivity and JAVA/Phone/etc non radio access to IRLP is disconnected.

I believe if that was done, as I understand the positions of all involved, it would be acceptable and allowed back in via a channel driver.

We need someone to build the lock outs for the methods IRLP doesn’t allow when IRLP channel driver is active

You can see more about this on my astEchoIRLP project, that actually did solve this using the EchoIRLP design by Tony VK3JED about 3 years ago. I realize this is the other way around.

Certainly would love to see our ham community work this out, but we need to solve the reason IRLP doesn’t want Allstar nodes connected and then we “may” be able to work it all out.

Mike

Steven,

I have not recently. In the past, about a year ago, what I wrote below was the lay of the land. It would be great if someone had the ability to bridge the gap.

I’m not sure who from the Allstar team may have a great connection, but if we all email that would be bad.

Mike

I believe the issue is the IRLP network doesn’t want computer users and/or phones on the network like Echolink/Allstar. They want actual radios on both ends of a conversation. That is ok – their network, their rules.

So, to date the work arounds have been:

  1. Dave Cameron is ok with connecting Allstar to a joint EchoIRLP reflector (that does Echolink and IRLP) because you as a user choose to connect to that reflector. Many of the Great Lakes Reflectors are designed with Allstar, Echolink and IRLP. It doesn’t work perfectly always.
  2. You can use an EXP IRLP node number, again because endusers have to enable it on the IRLP network giving them the choice to connect to these or not.

My $0.02,
Mike

Fuck him, it's source code, and code has no politics. If people want to use
it they should be free to do so. If he wants to ban users from his network so
be it.

More users he bans the faster irlp dies. I see the irlp channel driver as
being a migration tool.

This is a good idea, but what begs the question is why should we have to modify the usage of our systems just to support that? Can’t we just be responsible sysops instead and manage it in accordance with their rules?

Again, not saying this is a bad solution, but I can also see resistance to it if in fact it was the only way at which point I think a lot of folks including myself would question it altogether.

So, to date the work arounds have been:

  2. You can use an EXP IRLP node number, again because endusers have to enable it on the IRLP network giving them the choice to connect to these or not.

In general I left IRLP and for that matter EchoLink in the dust a
long time ago.

One of the things that has been discussed is a generic channel

driver that would be able to take external IO and audio and pass
them in and out of ASL.

The same basic concept we used for DMRGateway and the proposed

D-StarGateway. That way, ASL does not need to change, other then
moving EchoLink out of ASL.

I can see the ABILITY to enable or disable functions of ASL when

such a channel driver is activated.

Remember, ASL is Open Source and will ALWAYS remain so. Anyone is

welcome to build on what is in the GIT repository today or in the
future.

Pull requests are welcome and encouraged. I strongly recommend

people get comfortable with GIT.

Well there Mr. N6GKL here’s the low down on that one: . I have that exact config here and last year, after running it for just a week or two, complaints landed in Canada and Mr. K6DC sent me a nasty gram, informing me, the lowly unwashed, to see the light, walk the walk, and get back in line. If I failed to keep up from thirst or fatigue, or disobedience, then I would simply be shot in the head, and left for dead on the Great Trail through Canada to the frozen North. The complaints came from some self appointed Sheriffs, if you insist I would be happy to list the callsigns, but since you refer to David Cameron as “MR.” I suspect that you already know who the players are.

Well there Mr. N6GKL here’s the low down on that one: .

Loren,

It is not censoring.

Years ago Mr. Cameron TOLD WB6NIL and the developers to remove IRLP. It is a dead issue. It was removed. Stirring the pot or whipping a dead horse is waste space. It is out, over said and done. Wanting to bring up a debate that has no place is fodder to most of us. Let it go.

No one is editing content. Some people feel that it is
non-productive. it would be editing or censorship for us to limit
either side.

Chuck it’s the fact that we should remain open about everything… As far as the irlp owners and wishes to me that should be their issue… irlp runs on asterisk natively and the last time I had a look their was an open source project with irlp… In my opinion it’s a do so at your own risk kinda conversation… But not pushing forward and keeping the documents clear as a hush hush type thing is not good either…

I understand the irlp mess but when it comes down to modifications and making the stuff work properly this by it self is worth publishing the material…

In my mind Irlp is a dead project anytime the owners of a project limit users it becomes a worthless solution… Basically a waist of time… Unfortunately we have boomers caught in the crossfire that don’t truly understand computers or how the technology works… Making life easier for these individuals is a great thing regardless of anyone elses thoughts and opinions… Like I said it’s a do so at your own risk type of project… Maybe one day the irlp guys will realize that they should have been more compatible with other VoIP solutions unfortunately I don’t think this will save his company… Hams are cheap we like to work on things with our hands and modify software to suite our needs…
