Hi Bob - KK6ECM,
Zoiper's very brief *99 tone bursts for the PTT never consistently got decoded on my node. Using vox mode and the mute button as you suggest solves that issue very nicely.

I think it is easier to setup VOX in extensions.conf (use Pv instead of P),
then just use the mute button as your PTT.
[myphone]
exten => 28765,1,Rpt,28765|Pv ;|P for phone control
exten => 29009,1,Rpt,29009|Pv ;|Pv for phone control w/vox
