When I first setup a RPi with DIAL on our repeater, it sounded tinny, and I made a change in configuration in usbradio that de-emphasized the audio. It was too much, loosing too many of the higher frequency components that make for clarity of audio. I'm looking for information on what settings (e.g. dsp, and the rx and tx settings, =flat, =speaker, etc) that have a pre- or de-emphasis effects in app_rpt. A general discussion would be useful as well. I can address this in hardware, but wanted to explore the software approach first.
Sounds like you're de-emphasizing the RX audio and not pre-emphasizing the TA audio, but should be.
The exact set-up is determined by the radio and what it wants/needs. What radio are you using and how do you have it connected? What radio adapter are you using?

In my estimation it’s best to let the radio do the filtering whenever possible. It’s not that app_rpt does anything bad, it does a perfectly find job. I just think the filtering and limiting in the radio will work and sound as intended by the manufacture. Of course there are always exceptions and extenuating circumstances… ymmv.

Here's my take. If you have radios [repeaters] (even ones of different manufacture) that exhibit a frequency response equal or greater than the bandwidth of the software, and let app_rpt do the signal processing, then everything will sound identical. Personally, I could care less how a manufacturer intends on how their repeaters should sound. I want everything to sound the same. Allowing the application to do that very thing makes a multiple repeater / multiple repeater manufacturer system sound alike when channel hopping.
Disclaimer... I use a version of this application that has the availability of wider then stock audio bandwidth for the local path.
