USB Adapter has no EEPROM installed

Two questions for the group:

#1 I’m seeing this in my /var/log/asterisk - I’m using a DMK URI with EEPROM and a Motorola GM300 with one of Marshall’s Motorola Maxtrac, GM300 and M120 16 Pin Radio to URI cables.

[Nov 1 11:30:05] NOTICE[6852] chan_usbradio.c: USB Adapter has no EEPROM installed or Checksum BAD on channel usb42372

I understand that the benefit of the DMK URI with EEPROM is that the interface configuration can be stored in the URI as apposed to (where else?) - is this URI EEPROM feature taken advantage of with app_rpt and associated drivers?

#2 How do I choose which channel driver to use - simpleusb or USBRadio? From what I’ve been able to learn through varius wikis and posts on the subject, I would want to use simpleusb because all of the hardware connections for COS and CTCSS are provided so there is no reason to use the DSP features of USBRadio thus simplifying what the driver has to do and perhaps lowering the CPU utilization. I’ve also read some posts that describe audio degredation in the USBRadio driver but I can’t tell you the cause. I expect the right answer here is for me to try out both and experiment - which I will do but would appreciate any wisdome from the group on their experience with these drivers when using the DMK URI and hardware connections for COS/CTCSS. My current configuration below is getting favorable audio reports.

I have no simpleusb.conf in my /etc/asterisk

I have usbradio.conf and usbradio_tune_usb42372.conf

I have the following in my rpt.conf: rxchannel=Radio/usb42372

I have the following in my usbradio.conf:

[usb42372]

hdwtype=0

rxboost=1

txboost=1

rxctcssrelax=1

txctcssdefault=71.9

rxctcssfreqs=71.9

txctcssfreqs=71.9

;rxctcssoverride=0

carrierfrom=dsp

ctcssfrom=dsp

rxdemod=flat

txprelim=yes

txlimonly=no

txtoctype=notone

txmixa=composite

txmixb=no

invertptt=0

rxnoisefiltype=0

eeprom=1

Larry can’t answer #1.

I simply program the radio to provide what I want on the accessory

connector, then there is no EEPROM needed.

As for answer #2

When you have COS and CTCSS (PL) available use simpleUSB it not only

requires less processing power, it also does not suffer from
degraded audio.

Just add the file and stanza you need..

Yes, there are people that want the EEPROM in the URI, but I really am not sure why.

Is there anything that the URI will do with this EEPROM tuning info that Asterisk cannot do?

Cory, You might have your hearing checked, you most likely think
d-star sounds good also.

I never said USBradio was horrible, simply said usbradio audio is

superior. It’s a subjective thing, most can hear the difference…
obviously you can’t or you would not have made such a statement…

No, it’s just a convenient way of making things FAR less confusing and difficult to deal with
when there is more then 1 URI on a system (the USB stuff leaves a lot to be desired as far
as port/device identification, and if you “move stuff around”, it can be VERY hard to deal with).

The radio tuning parameters are stored in the EEPROM. Therefore, its probably best
to put the EEPROM in the connector with the cable physically connected to the radio,
so that you can change URI’s, and the tuning parameters move with the radio, not the URI.

Yes, there are people that want the EEPROM in the URI, but I really am not sure why.

Please state some facts to show this! I have tested this with audio analyzes and have yet to see what you are talking about. If this is the case then my users can’t tell the difference either and I have some users work in the broadcast industry. All I am asking for is proof. Could people just not be setting this up right? Hi Guys,

I agree 100% that personal attacks only start flame wars and don't solve
any problems.

However, I do agree with Fred. For those who haven't heard the difference
between simpleusb and usbradio, I suggest a simple test with a stock USB
sound FOB and a computer audio headset and mic combo....Put the USB FOB in
full duplex mode and talk to yourself. While I realize this is an
unscientific test, the difference between the two channel drivers is
immediately obvious and striking!

While many hams out there (including myself) do have great -radio- test
equipment, most lack the equipment to carefully check audio dynamic range,
frequency response and other audio-specific parameters.

Incidentally, for comparison purposes, another interesting experiment is
to try this same headset test with one of the commercially available
analog controllers out there...I've tried that, too, and as expected, the
performance is even better, substantially better....But, I digress.

If anyone wants to try this and doesn't know how to proceed, I'll post a
link to my exact test setup, if interested.

Anyhow....Please don't take these comments in a negative way. My -only-
intention is to push the state-of-the-art forward.

I have tested on a ge mastr II and mvp, Motorola m120, maxtracs, and radius models, msf5000, and an r100. The r100 did sound better on simpleusb and it did show on a graph that way as well, but it also wasn't using true discriminator audio. If you align the Audio that way it is supposed to be you will not see a difference. I must say though that I have only used true discriminator audio so if you are testing something else then the findings may be different.

However, I do agree with Fred. For those who haven't heard the difference

sound FOB and a computer audio headset and mic combo....Put the USB FOB in
full duplex mode and talk to yourself.

I have received some personals emails and thought it would be better to answer here. Xipar does have a much wider range of audio and yes it does have filters than can be adjusted so I am not using this comparison in the usbradio / simpleusb comparison.

Dave... Are you actually calibrating your head set with the service equipment? If not then you don't have a base level to compare against. I still can't find the graphs I had from this or I would post them. The screen went on my test equipment so I can't do anymore testing until I find another screen.

This, so much this. I had a friend who was ragging on asterisk/allstar
sounding like crap, even after it was adjusted proper.
I helped him set it up and indeed it was back to sounding like crap the next week.

Turns out his USB adapters were randomly coming up as different nodes when the
server would reboot. I put a pciradio card in there and solved it.

Can't really say enough good things about those pciradio cards.

Actually this is easily fixed. First set up the first node and do all audio cals.
Then save the with radio tune save. That also saves the usb slot that URI /Fob is connected to in the tune file for that node.

Plug in the second uri and make the second node active. Then setup the the second node and audio cals. Then save the radio tune settings to save the usb slot for that node in the second tune file.

Now if you reboot the box it should remember which nodes are on what URI.

I have done this with many nodes with multiple nodes and it works all the time. If you dont do this when setting up the nodes the URIs will get jumbled up as its a crap shoot at boot up when the sw will detect the usb devices.

the usb devices.

Can’t really say enough good things about those pciradio cards.

That was not the case with this box. It did indeed randomly choose what
device to init first.

anyways, eeprom is worth the 10 bux.

We should be able to control that with a udev rule.

I have 5 USB fobs to play with and I know the udev rule tango - I’ll see if there is something that lets you lock it down regardless of order. That is the case with WiFi, serial and Ethernet dongles I have worked with in the past so I see no reason (yet) why USB audio devices would be any different…
