Which model of SIP phones is everyone using? Any preferences?
Chuck K0XM
For minimal headaches, Polycom all the way
Cisco phones also have SIP firmware available, but can be a real pain to install and support at times. There are other SIP phones out there, but I’ve only had experience with Cisco and Polycom phones and my preference is Polycom to use in a SIP/Asterisk environment.

SNOM phones are nice too. The smaller SNOM 300 can be found on
EBay frequently (as can the larger SNOM 320an 360).

Hi Chuck,
I don't know what your needs are, but, if you're looking for something
VERY inexpensive but functional, try Grandstream. I've been using them for
years now....I've even got a small Grandstream HT286 (and wireless POTS
phone) that I carry around with me to access my Asterisk box running
apt_rpt! ...Works great with app_rpt running in VOX mode!

I'm in this camp as well. I've used MANY Grandstream GXP2000s and also use one of the HT286 at home - all hooked into Asterisk. They work like a charm! Very reasonable costs-wise.

I have a Aastra 6757i on my desk at work and a Cisco something-another at home on my desk. Also using the Sipdroid app for Android on my HTC Droid Eris.

I use the Polycom IP501 in the shack. Excellent SIP speaker phone, I use it to monitor my node when I’m in the shack. I also have two wireless SIP phones, the Hitachi IP5000 and the Linksys WEP330. The Hitachi is the nicer of the two with great battery life and nice sound quality. The problems with it are that 1) it’s out of production and there have been no further f/w updates and 2) it only supports static WEP keys (no WPA). The WEP330 is WinCE-based, has a nice color screen, but is a PITA to configure and everytime I turn around the battery is dead. It’s also out of production. Because of the above limitations, I’m not currently using either wireless phone opting instead to just use my Blackberry. If I get a tweet indicating someone has connected to the node and I’m not near the shack, I just speed dial my SIP phone number, enter my security pin, and can then monitor and even talk to whoever connected (*98 to key up, # to unkey).

Hi men,
In Europe, and mainly France where I am, you can see :
- Aastra (excellent for business, perfect sound, easy provisionning, BLF, excellent pricing)
- Polycom (excellent audio, business class, not realy present here due to a poor distribution in Europe and the higher prices against other brands)
- Snom (correct audio, but not so good than Aastra or Polycom, very complete features, but higher price than Aastra)
- Thomson (but I don't like them)
- Grandstream (I don't like them)
- few chinese models (I like the AR1688 chipset, IAX compliant)
And, I use also my iPhone with few SIP or IAX softphones applications.
One is nice, called "Fring", which can group all your chat/phone applications account in only one, and permitting to use Skype phone on 3G !!!

Wasnt a “Fring” a cross between a french-fry (which, of course is not French
in any way) and an onion ring??
