Private Node IP Updates

One of the features of AllstarLink I really appreciate is the node registration, and the resulting rpt_extnodes list that reports any updates in public IP address. I’m using an ISP that changes public IP periodically, and without notice, so this feature of AllstarLink is very important. Is there any way of providing a similar capability when using private nodes?

Thanks,
Bob

One possible method and probably most popular is to subscribe to a dynamic DNS service.

Most routers have built-in section to enable these services.

It basically just uses a software update to read your current IP and send it to the name server who will hand it to those seeking your address.

Check with a few actually using a service to see how it has worked for them (reputation)

A quick look on the net will show you there are plenty of folks doing it. I have not used one in 17 years so I can't recommend one.

noip.com has a free dynamic dns service. (free requires confirmation every month) If your router doesn’t support the service, they offer a windows, mac and linux download to run on a machine inside the same network.

I use another free service, but they recently stopped offering the free option. This noip.com has a $25 a year option that gives you up to 25 hostnames. (depending on how many does you use, could be useful.) I have one on allstar that uses this service, and 3 off allstar, all have had zero complaints. All do the $25 a year option.

I +1 Bryan’s contribution. I also have used Noip for many many years and have never had an issue with it. I used the paid service for a while for myself and then added the local club’s website to it, which I maintain, and then just recently moved it off to a different service becuse the host of our site does DNS it’s self. I now only use the free one for me. It’s great.
