Pi reports wrong temperature

Just curious if others have seen this, but I have had two Pi’s (out of about 20) report higher than expected temps. When I take a laser heat gun and check the temp (with the cover already off when the high temp was reported) I find it is actually quite normal. Example: Report is 57 degrees C, but laser reports 36-40…similar to the other pis on the rack. Do the sensors sometimes fail like this?

I think the reported CPU temperature is the on-chip sensor. That is not something you can measure from outside the package.

Thx. I’ve had two now that for no reason I can see run in the red most of the time, but they keep on going… maybe not for as many years, but they keep working. The fan is good, the heatsink contact is good, nothing has changed. Strange.
