Hi All, Please help. I have a VHF Shari node (622961) running ASL3. When I am using my home wifi I have no connection problems outgoing or incoming, everything works fine. Also when I am tethered to my cellphone (CSpire) I have no connection troubles incoming or outgoing. I have purchased 2 separate prepaid wireless hotspot plans. One Cricket Wireless and the other AT&T Prepaid. The only outgoing connection I can make using the hotspots is to the 55553 parrot node. This connection never fails, but all others fail. I purchased the hotspots to use at my job in the Gulf of Mexico where we have AT&T service on our platform.
Most cellular donât allow port forwarding which I suspect is your problem
I would agree with on that matter if my problem was only incoming connections. But I canât make outgoing connections to any node other than the 55553 parrot node.
This is the CLI when connecting to 55553
This is the CLI when connection fails to any other node. This node is 622960 which is a my cloud node.
When I first installed ASL3 I was having issues connecting to some nodes. My local DNS server was causing problems so I installed resolvconf as described here:
Node 55553 is mine. It is set up with the |x flag, meaning it doesnât care about your registration status, or if your reported IP address matches what the ASL registration thinks your IP is.
My guess is that one of a couple of things is happening:
It is possible you are attempting to connect to nodes that are still using rpt_extnodes as the only lookup method, and the IP address for your node either doesnât exist at time of connect, or, because mobile connections are what they are, the IP address could have already changed, thus the IP you connect from isnât what the node expects to see, so it rejects the connection.
One way to resolve this problem, at least in part, would be to set up a wireguard, Zero Tier or some other type of VPN client on your node, with a server on the other side. Set the client IP as static. Then, no matter how often your mobile ISP changes your IP address (T-Mobile sometimes does this multiple times per hour), you will always come from the same IP address every time you connect to a node. This would even allow you to accept incoming connections with appropriate firewall rules on the serving side of the VPN if you wanted to do such things.
In your screenshot:
THis is clear evidence you arenât authenticated properly. What does ârpt show registrationsâ output?
I think the issue is that when you connect via the hotspot it takes time for your new IP address to get registered before other nodes will allow you to connect. Once booted and connected on your hotspot let it sit for a while (hour) and try. It will work. When I start my truck my two MMDVM and my Allstar node boot up. It takes the allstar the longest to connect because it has to register then the other nodes have to pick up the new IP from the DNS system. Maybe 10-12 minutes most of the time.
Note: No one will ever be able to connect to you when you are using a cell system for the connection. They use CG-NAT which does not allow incoming port connections.
If youâre validly registering against AllStarLinkâs services and using ASL software, it definitely will not take an âhourâ or â10-12 minutesâ for the registration to become active. Updating the registration database is immediate and both the âfilesâ and âDNSâ lookup types have 15-30 second update intervals depending on some vagaries. The only way that a registration isnât available within 60 seconds to other nodes is if their nodes are not promptly obtaining the updated file database or arenât using the nodes.allstarlink.org DNS system. I donât know what HamVOIP does, but itâs not integrated to the ASL registration process.
This is a screenshot from I am connected to my Wifi at home. I donât believe my problem to be in my configuration as I have no problems when connected at home nor do I have problems when I am tethered to my cellphone(CSpire). I only have problems making connections while connected to either my AT&T hotspot or my Cricket wireless hotspot.
Thanks for the direction. I set up a vpn via wireguard and can now make outgoing connections on the hotspots
FWIW - I ran into similar - 44 Net https://portal.ampr.org/ along with your Wireguard or Openvpn might be an added bonus. I found a Pre Paid - $10/mo Data only plan - 2gb at full speed - then⌠128k/b for the next 25 daysâŚ(the 2gb plays out pretty fast)⌠128kb/s is adequate for an ASL node - even after the 2gb bucket runs dry - Makes for a $10 / internet connection to a repeater site that does not have other connectivity⌠(T-Mobile)
For a test, you might try using google dns in your server.
