Mini ITX Choice

I’m looking for a good mini ITX solution for Asterisk/app_rpt. I had been using Intel D525 CPU/motherboard but those are getting hard to find. What’s a good motherboard/CPU combo for Linux these days?

Hi,

Most Mini-ITX boards will work well with Linux but watch out for
overheating chips, the South Bridge / VGA controller, in particular. Many
of these boards don't have a heatsink on the South Bridge and will burn up
(or lock up!) in short order in an already hot repeater cabinet.

At least the solution is simple! Attach a small adhesive-backed heatsink
to the hot chips and this problem is usually eliminated. Ebay sells a big
selection of these heatsinks.

This is my experience too. I have tried several using the NM70 chipset, and NONE of them worked. (Fine on Rx but no audio on Tx). I have used several with the NM10 chipset (which are for atom processors) and they have all worked without any trouble.

This one worked for me

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ECK4A5A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie
=UTF8&psc=1

It uses the NM10 chip set. And is in place running a repeater as we speak.
Runs fairly cool. I have a small case fan on it to move air by the heat sink
on the CPU in the hot repeater shack.

I've not had good experiences with the Celeron with the NM70 chip set such
as

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D1A8094/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie
=UTF8&psc=1

which does not work with the audio devices like the URI

Thanks,

Tim, I just recently tried something off-beat, and not for everyone. I have in the past used D945 Intel boards in a Mini M200 case with a CPU blower and a case side blower. But you have to get decent fans, most of the stuff out there will expire quickly and you get overheating and shutdown. I have node 2360 running on one of these with Limey on it, no problems after I changed the fans. Also the right pico power supply is necessary. There are a couple of models that make the 12 volts. Most seems to pass the 12V along from the outside power supply. If that wiggles a bit low, the CPU power source goes bonkers and you have a lockup/shut down, etc. But the ones that have not only wide input but down to 6V are the ones to get. They just run and run and very cool.

OK, that all said, background, I linked two sites using something called DRIL, adapted from openh323 by Armadillo in Texas. Worked ok, but a CPU killer, ran at 100% always. Built on a WYSE/Netier thin client box. Then I discovered Allstar and the above setup. But I recently saw a WYSE thin client on eBay in a nice package. Has 128MB od flash drive and I stuck a gig of ram in, made a version of Limey to run it and tried it and it was great. Going to modify my node to it sooner or later. Cost? $15, including power supply and a very nice small package. Two nodes in it? CPU a bit small. DSP audio? Probably not. Didn’t even try.

Buy all new stuff? I’d go with one of the Intel 2500 boards a M200 case ans a PicoPSU60WI flash module and Limey.

I also have about a dozen D2500HN genuine Intel boards running. I find them to be very reliable as I have never had to replace one yet.
I stuff in 2G RAM and couple a 16 GB SSD to them.

Tastes great - less filling.

I just put a Biostar NM70I-1037U into service as a hub and RTCM host (no USB).

It couldn’t read the CDROM until turning on AHCI. No install problems other than that.

These have a Celeron which run at a higher CPU voltage than the ATOM. Someone said they think the higher CPU voltage is less susceptible to RF crashing the system. Requires a CPU fan and a higher power PS than the ATOM.

It’s looking like a pretty good choice in the speed department:
