Micro-Node RTCM

I am considering using these for a amateur repeater voting application. The alternative would be to roll my own with a Raspberry Pi 3 and probably the HamVOIP.org distribution. Who out there is using the RTCM? I can find very little information beyond the manual and I am concerned that the software may not be maintained and that there is not enough access to the underlying Linux system.

Who can tell me more about the RTCM?

Has anyone rolled their own with a Pi3? Any advice there?

-Doug-

A software based system cannot provide the timing required for a voter system. See https://www.allstarlink.org/votersystem.pdf under “Description,” first two paragraphs.

Thanks,
Bob

That is why you use an RTCM that is hardware based with a Garmin GPS-18x LVC attached to it.

You seem confused… you still need a linux system running app_rpt with the RTCM’s… think of the RTCM as an ethernet based radio interface vs usb.. But that radio interface when you add GPS to each one can do voting with others.. and with some more work simulcast transmitting…

We have some 50-60 RTCM’s deployed and love them… Getting ready to rebuild another clubs VHF repeater voter system with a 6 site RTCM based voting system. I just started testing the new hamvoip rPi3 image with some rtcm’s myself...

I know that I would have a GPS with 1pps feed to get the timing. Once you have that, what is different in an RTCM other than nice packaging?
What is the core processor technology inside the RTCM. I am assuming is some form of ARM processor. Can you can you get a root shell and use SSH to access?

Thank you Mark, that was very informative.

My guess is that this device is unlikely to be able to “defend” itself very well and should probably be placed behind a restrictive firewall. Do you concur?

Thanks, Fredric.

I had assumed it was running app_voter but I see now its just running its own private codebase. If you have a separate repeater controller like an Arcom 210, there is no need for any Linux unless you are planning to run Allstar, Echolink or IRLP. Have I interpreted this correctly?

Yes the RTCM can be used behind a firewall and does not require any port forwarding for normal operation. There is a telnet console for configuration and if you want to configure the RTCM remotely you will need to forward that port.

As the only open port is a telnet port.. filter 23 if your worried but we have some external without issue for years now but we block 23 by default upstream on our networks..

The devices work as stated. We have had issues with one or two and they were issues that Mark(the dev/maker) addressed right away and has always been help full the few times we have even needed support. Don’t look at the “lack” or frequency of the code releases as anything but the fact the devices work and work well. We have some with multi-year up times and ones we haven't touched in years they just run..

You have to have a linux box with app_rpt running chan_voter. That’s what the RTCM’s connect to.. Even if you are not running GPS or voting but single radio setups. Think of the RTCM as a smart USB radio interface that uses ethernet to talk to APP_RPT.

We have ditched all our RC210’s years ago and use RTCM’s directly into the repeaters. Motorola Purc5k’s, MTR2000’s, GR1225’s, Motorola Nucs, quantars and ge master II/III repeaters we have all interfaced to… remote rx wise we use mtr2000’s,maxtrac’s, cdm’s and 1225’s all. There is a feature we enable in the RTCM’s called offline repeat. If the RTCM in the main repeater losses connection to the Linux box running app_rpt for any reason the device turns into a simple repeater controller with hangtime and CW id. Which as there are many updates of code to app_rpt linux installs it helps while services are restarting and the like. You will update the linux host and app_rpt more then any RTCM.

Thank you Mark, that was very informative.

My guess is that this device is unlikely to be able to "defend" itself very well and should probably be placed behind a restrictive firewall. Do you concur?

Looking for a pointer on where I can find current firmware for RTCMs?
Formerly the firmware was at http://svn.ohnosec.org/viewvc/projects/allstar/voter/board-firmware/?root=svn
That link now seems dead.

Where would an RTCM owner find the latest firmware…

I know that I would have a GPS with 1pps feed to get the timing. Once you have that, what is different in an RTCM other than nice packaging?

What is the core processor technology inside the RTCM. I am assuming is some form of ARM processor. Can you can you get a root shell and use SSH to access?
