Making a node with a baofeng 888s 2018 ver9 radio

Greetings,
Has anyone come across this “new” variant of the 888s radio? I’ve been looking over the guide(s) on modifying them for use with AllStar and cannot for the life of me figure out where several of the signals can be picked up… Here’s an image of the back of the main board in the radio:

I’ve removed the 5 screws on this board but also cannot figure out how to liberate it from the heatsink/RF shield on the bottom of it. Anyone with some ideas or experience with this variant of the 888? I’m a bit lost. The Crompton guide (http://crompton.com/hamradio/baofeng888/) stops with the 2015 ver7 iteration of this radio. The little header/through holes used in the guides are not present, or I cannot find them. Thanks all!

The only thing about these radios which is good is the price. In RF, audio,
and interface performance they are truly terrible.

I've attempted to get discriminator audio out of them, and it's impossible as
the entire radio from RF input to audio output is on a single chip. This
means you're limited to using a simpleusb to drive them.

That said, yes, they change the boards all the time, and there are about a
dozen different variants of the 888 radio I've seen from different sellers.
But at under 10 USD per radio, even Macklemore can buy two. If during probing
around, you blow it up, toss it and start over with the other one

I've not seen this latest version you describe, but it looks like you may have
to use some wirewrap wire and come off the IC on the component side of the
board directly now. This isn't hard, but will require some skills to solder
to the pins of the SMD parts directly.

Happy probing,

I believe you are using the same board I used for my node. Here is a link to the pictures I found on the site when I was modifying my 888.

Soldering onto the leg of the IC for the COS was not that hard. Small gauge wire and a steady hand gets it done pretty easily.

Message me directly if you want detailed pics of my modified board.

Mathew, I’'ve had great success interfacing the baofeng 888 to a URI. I great audio reports as well.

Baofeng changes it’s design from time to time but points you need are there, just takes a bit of searching.

Thanks Ted but I’m not the one who asked the original question. I built my node a long time ago with a cm108 interface. URI works great too I have a few friends who used that and it was very simple to set up thats a great product.

I’m struggling with v9 too.

did you ever find where to connect the cos

I think you need to click the link and read the pdf for reference.

Yes sir, that link has the correct place to pick up COS on this radio. I just opened up my BRIAN and that’s where I have it soldered.
