How much data actually used?

There is some resistance to “paying” for internet at a site.
Does anyone know how much actual data is used ?
I know this can very, but is there a way to “share” a connection?

It’s about a 135 Kb stream. From what I’ve hear a $5/mo plan from https://www.vultr.com covers it. I have I have 6 RTCMs plus Echolink and a frequently used Hub on a $15/mo from https://www.nfoservers.com. Never had a data overrun.

That is a complicated question to answer without all the information needed to give an exact answer.

It will really depend on two factors. The first is what codec you will be using. The second is the amount of activity on your node and how often it is used.

Let assume you are going to use the highest quality codec ULAW.
This codec uses 64 kbps (roughly 87.2 kbps with the overhead) per second.

So we will round up to 100 kbps per second.

If your Allstarlink node was connected to another node for 24 hours straight, the amount of data usage would be around 1 gigabyte.

An exact average may be hard to come up with.

Some nodes have multiple connections going all the time.

Other nodes may be lucky to get 10 hours of connection time a month.

A general guess average would be around 3.5 GB/mo

And that’s assuming you’re using the highest quality codec, as Marshall points out. Most don’t, and get perfectly acceptable results using something less bandwidth intensive. It’s communications, not FM stereo broadcast; 3.5K audio plus 600 for PL. Not that we should settle for crappy audio, but you don’t need ULAW to get good sounding noise out of your repeaters.

At a site I was using, no internet, renting an AT&T hotspot with 5gig a month included, and rarely, if ever, went over 2.5G of consumption a month.

If you can, just make yourself a link from a member of the group to the mountain top using 2 Power Beam from ubiquity . I used that same idea for feeding internet to a site with a 5 miles link in 2.4 Ghz more then 10 years ago.

PtP links can be done up to 25 miles without big problem. the key thing is to have a good line of sight.

With the member giving the internet to your equipement on the site it will cost penny to the member that will give the internet. Most of the time people have unlimited bandwidth on the contract they have at home. and the amount taken wont matter on performance on his side

Here is a simulation done for our club setup.
The antenna on the mountain is a 120 degree sectorial antenna and both site, the club house and my QTH are on the map.
You can see that with such setup we can use a source (my QTH to feed the sectorial antenna and then our club can connect to it and use the internet I provide to both the repeater site and the club local. The whole distance from my qth to the repeater site to the club is close to 100 Km so about 60 miles. The bandwidth is at 33Mbps (lowest link speed to the club , the speed between the qth and repeater is 44Mbps

Latency is in the few ms range. 5 to 15 ms max.

It is not that complicated to do.

I have an article where I researched this for our VT allstar group

it seems voip data usage varies form 22kbs to 86kpbs

not sure if this has changed since 2013

U-Law being 64kbps and the codec with less compression, with the overhead, 86 kbps make total sens.

Pierre, are the links stable with the Q numbers in the 60’s ?
we are deploying a network next week and I am holding my breath
where the link simulations are in the 80’s

I am hoping to be able to use this network for other things as well
like a Citadel instance that gets gated to the internet along with the
AllStar traffic
