homebrew USB sound fob no RX audio

I made the modification to the startech CM108 sound fob. This is for a second node on the same machine. Everything should be working, the node is transmitting with audio and PTT is activating properly.

The receive should be working too, I plugged it in to my macbook and was able to hear the white noise just fine and I could hear my voice when I keyed up.

I also had Jeremy W0JRL help with everything on the software, and we tried about everything from Flat audio to speaker audio to COR to CTCSS but still no receive audio coming through the network, it isn’t detecting anything when I am transmitting from my node radio to the node.

I was on the phone with him for almost two hours trying anything we could think of, I did anything hardware, and he modified anything software, but we still got no audio through the network. We even turned off the squelch and there was a dead carrier through the network.

Is there something wrong compatibility wise with this fob? I did everything in the instructions and I got it from here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829128002.

I used this instruction manual

http://www.repeater-builder.com/projects/fob/USB-Fob-Construction.pdf

If this is a compatibility issue, it is sure a weird one because the Txaudio worked fine.

Is there a way to tell if any audio at all is coming in to AllStar?

What can I try next to troubleshoot?

First I am using the Baofeng radio for the second node, and using speaker audio, which I understand is not the best, but I am hoping I can at least get it to work.

Second, I hit menu 2 Auto detect RX noise level:

Tries=6, setting=563, meas=25995, sqnoise=168.

Now I hit menu 4 Auto detect CTCSS with carrier and CTCSS

And this is where I have issuees

Setting = 8.00 meas=0.00

RX CTCSS GAIN ADJUST FAILED

I also tried it with speaker audio instead of flat, but I still couldn’t get it to work. I remember at some point while listening on the web transceiver a tiny bit of audio came through but nothing really is getting through since.

Thanks,

Skyler

Skyler,

You may want to refer to the following articles to insure you didn't cut the wrong trace eliminating RX audio getting to the CM108 chip. There is nothing wrong compatibility wise.

http://www.repeater-builder.com/projects/fob/startech-fob.html

The second article has a PDF you can refer to as well.

There is RX audio, however! I plugged the device into my macbook computer and activated the application Linein and heard the radio hiss come back through my headphones and when I keyed up, I heard my voice come back.

OK. So, the program is seeing the discriminator audio at a level

of 25995, but not seeing the tone of 206.5 Hz. In
/etc/asterisk/usbradio.conf, do you have the following values set:

txctcssdefault=206.5 ; default tx ctcss freq, any frequency

permitted

rxctcssfreqs=206.5 ; rx ctcss freqs in floating point. must

be in table

txctcssfreqs=206.5 ; tx ctcss freqs, any frequency permitted

rxctcssoverride=0 ; Set to 1 or yes to start out in carrier

squelch mode

Hmm, while 206.5 is a valid tone value in my Wouxun KG-UV3D radio,

it is not one of the “standard” 38 CTCSS tones that is in most
tone tables, and I’m wondering if it is defined in the app_rpt
software. Could you try switching the radio and usbradio.conf file
entries to a more common tone, such as 203.5 Hz, that I know
works? After saving the file, be sure to execute “CLI> restart
now”

First I am using the Baofeng radio for the second

node, and using

speaker audio, which I understand is not the best,

but I am

hoping I can at least get it to work.

Second, I hit menu 2 /Auto detect RX noise level:/
/
/
*Tries=6, setting=563, meas=25995, sqnoise=168.*
*
*
Now I hit menu 4 Auto detect CTCSS with carrier and

CTCSS

And this is where I have issuees
*Setting = 8.00 meas=0.00*
*RX CTCSS GAIN ADJUST FAILED*
*
*
I also tried it with speaker audio instead of flat,

but I still

couldn't get it to work. I remember at some point

while listening

on the web transceiver a tiny bit of audio came

through but

nothing really is getting through since.

Thanks,
Skyler

From the CLI, make sure you have correct CM108

fob selected

(if more than one is hooked up) and run CLI>

"radio tune

rxnoise" without the quotation marks, with the

receiver

sending discriminator audio to the fob, and you

should be

seeing around 28000 as the level coming in. Call

me if you

need more help. You already have my number.

    N5ZUA

I made the modification to the startech CM108

sound fob.

This is for a second node on the same

machine. Everything

should be working, the node is transmitting

with audio

        and PTT is activating properly.

The receive should be working too, I plugged

it in to my

macbook and was able to hear the white noise

just fine

and I could hear my voice when I keyed up.

I also had Jeremy W0JRL help with everything

on the

software, and we tried about everything from

Flat audio

to speaker audio to COR to CTCSS but still no

receive

audio coming through the network, it isn't

detecting

anything when I am transmitting from my node

radio to the

        node.

I was on the phone with him for almost two

hours trying

anything we could think of, I did anything

hardware, and

he modified anything software, but we still

got no audio

through the network. We even turned off the

squelch and

there was a dead carrier through the network.

Is there something wrong compatibility wise

with this

fob? I did everything in the instructions and

I got it

        from here

.

        I used this instruction manual

If this is a compatibility issue, it is sure

a weird one

        because the Txaudio worked fine.

Is there a way to tell if any audio at all is

coming in

Did I read correctly that you are trying to use Baofeng speaker audio + USBRadio in order to decode CTCSS? The Baofeng filters CTCSS from the RX before it hits the speaker. A little may still leak through, but not enough to work. Look on the web and you will/may find mods to pick off the carrier detect on the Baofeng. This will give you the detection you need.
There aren’t any mods that I could find and people told me the speaker output is on the chip itself.

Can I use the RX CTCSS on the radio and use COR?

I have a question and a possible clue to the issue

Question:

Would a Dell dimension 8400 with a pentium 4 processer be able to handle two nodes at once? For the most part, the first node will only be connected to the second node and the second node will connect to remote nodes.

Possible clue to issue

So I was in the radio-tune-menu option number four, the CTCSS detection. I first did it on node Number 1 and it worked fine just like always. I then tried it on node number 2 and it didn’t work and everything was 0. Then I tried it with node number 1 but the USB devices swapped. Node 1 worked, and node 2 didn’t. So there is something wrong where no CTCSS will get detected and it is always 0. Here is my USBRADIO.conf

I have a question and a possible clue to the issue

Question:

Would a Dell dimension 8400 with a pentium 4 processer be

able to handle two nodes at once? For the most part, the first
node will only be connected to the second node and the second
node will connect to remote nodes.

Possible clue to issue

So I was in the radio-tune-menu option number four, the

CTCSS detection. I first did it on node Number 1 and it
worked fine just like always. I then tried it on node number 2
and it didn’t work and everything was 0. Then I tried it with
node number 1 but the USB devices swapped. Node 1 worked, and
node 2 didn’t. So there is something wrong where no CTCSS will
get detected and it is always 0. Here is my USBRADIO.conf

You might want to find another USB buss. Seems to me I recall

someone saying that there was sometimes an issue with running two
usb sound fobs on the same usb buss, maybe.

Sorry to be so vague, but I really don't remember -exactly-, but I

-believe- it was along those lines.

Your mileage may vary

If I understand your question correctly, try changing your port forwarding UDP number in your router to something different from your Allstarlink.org registered port number (e.g. bindport=4569 in iax.conf. You can get out, but no one can link in from outside. Or just change both your UDP forwarded port number and your Allstarlink.org registered number, just in case someone has hacked your UDP port number. If you make them different, don’t forget to change it back or your system won’t work correctly with the Allstar system.

I haven’t figured out the entire issue yet - but the remote causes asterisk to die continuously - can I block connections to my node from anything except nodes I want?

If so please advise on what config file to modify - TIA
