FreeDV over AllStar?

What is the viability of using FreeDV over the AllStar link network, or maybe an AllStar backbone?

First, does codec2 (which is what freestar uses) work on FM?

What would be the bandwidth requirements, discriminator required? , narrowband etc.....

Second, how hard would it be to develop something where analog and FreeDV users can talk to each other through the network?

I think it is the time to make a move on open source, experimental encouraging, digital.

Any thoughts / comments on FreeDV in general or any other digital modes?

It is my understanding that Allstar is really not welcome on D-Star. Is that just repeaters? The purists don’t want to mix analog with digital. Like Mototrbo and NexEdge.

I am not talking about DSTAR, I am talking about FreeDV, the digital mode, and the viability of making AllStar link a system which mixes analog FM with the open digital mode.

Yea, that defeats the purpose. these needed to be a decoupling of digital
radio formats and networks. This sadly has not happened and has lead to
Balkanization of repeaters. aka a big circlejerk over what's better.

This is cool. I know there is a dstar channel driver for asterisk, but it
needs a dongle. It should be trivial to get this same stuff working for
fredv, IF you know asterisk.

Try it and see…

it will be interesting to see if it comes out intact thru the codecs used by Asterisk.

<-- You can try it out on Allstar node 2200, which is bridged to D-STAR reflector XRF005A. There are a few other reflectors that offer the same bridging between networks.

Remember... these are reflectors, they do not make outbound calls - so he who connects, connects because he wants to!

as you’re finding out, it is WAY easy to confuse:

freedv

dstar

freestar

i’ll talk about freedv

freedv over fm would be just like psk31 over fm. no good reason other than to try and see what it’s like.

freedv via ssb is nice and narrow so using it via fm either 5 or 2.5 deviation wouldn’t “bring anything to the table”.

as for bridging, think how freedv works as intended, then swap out the headphones/mic for a usb dongle on your allstar server on its own node that is connected to a “normal” node.

freestar bridged to allstar.

good luck
