First duplex repeater - question about duplexor/power amp

Is there any reason why the power amp cannot be placed between the duplexor and antenna? My repeater will be 2 modular 1 watt radio modules, a 20W capable 6 cavity duplexor and a Mirage power amp.If the amp is after the duplexor then cool, if not then a more expensive duplexor will be required…

Yes. The duplexor is like a tx/rx switch.
If the PA is between the duplexor and the antenna, then you won’t be able to
receive because the signal from the antenna won’t pass through the PA in
reverse.

You can not do that.

Even if you could, how you would get a rx sig back through the amp ?
While it was working ?
It's the reason for the duplexer.

Think about it for a few....

Duh… oh well, that bumps the cost of the duplexor a bit… the one I was looking at was for 20 watts, the amp does 35 I believe…

You “could” use 2 antennas as long as you had enough vertical separation and not use a duplexer at all. If you’re at a site with other transmitters you’ll want a good filter/duplexer.

Sounds like it’s really a “Notchplexer”…OK for home use but thats about it. Since you have very low power your going to lose most of it in the filtering. Run 2 antennas and a single can on the RX…

Seriously???

Come on guys you can do better than this…

Turn the PA down to a power level the duplexer can handle.

Make up the losses with good quality Heliax and a good gain type antenna like maybe 4 folded dipoles phased together.

Or buy the right duplexer…

In any case a repeater setup is easy to get wrong and cause all kinds of grief.

My advice is go to repeater-builders.com and read up on how to build a repeater and what to expect.

Choose your components based on what you want to do with it.

If it is just going to be a toy, then build it cheap and don’t expect much when it does not perform.

If it is to be a viable system then get partners and spend what you need to but… Look for deals
