DTMF and Baofengs

Greetings all,

Interestingly enough after several days of trouble shooting an Allstar Shari node with ASL3 running, that the Baofeng radios don’t work with the current setup. The 3,6, and sometimes 9 DTMF tones do not translate to the node, making it impossible to connect out. ASL manager confirmed the no-tones for us and could not understand why. Apparently there is a “twist” to certain radios and tones.

They all vary.

On one radio I can adjust dtmf speed etc but on baofeng mini you cant set anything, that radio the mic is low and you have to turn up the rx in allstar but when you DTMF its at 2 billion decibels and allstar cant decode at all, if you turn the RX way down so DTMF works then the audio is way too low.

Have you taken a moment to verify your incomming audio source and asterisk deemphasis settings make sense?

Also check audio receive levels in asterisk during a DTMF. Make sure they are in the Goldilocks zone.

These two things — improper deemphasis and/or bad audio levels — are almost always the cause of DTMF decode issues.

(But it could just be the $30 radios, believe me, I know!)

This is almost always due to the RX level and/or de-emphasis being set incorrectly on the node. I have probably 20 different HT’s, including Baofengs, which are all decoded perfectly by a properly configured SHARI.
