Closed Net ASL Server and associated nodes

I’m looking into creating a closed net ASL server.

Only those who are club members can log in via a node.
Only repeaters with node on the server can log in
Not connected to extant ASL network, but standalone.
Can you configure the active service to a specific non-standard port?

Questions:
Can it be done?
Is the Node software also the server software?
Can the “server” be a Pi (which version) or a PC (only running Debian, not Fedora)?

Thank you

Create a whitelist for your member’s nodes. Here’s the docs for ASL3.

Thank you, that makes sense.

Here’s a newbie Allstar question (but seasoned Linux admin), and may be duplicate in nature:

We plan on using GMRS band radios/repeaters to access nodes. I’m sure the radio hats for Pi’s can handle the freq we pick, but can I use the software disconnected from the Allstar system entirely (i.e., I dictate the node numbers, the IP address of the server, etc.)?

Thanks again!

Yes. There are folks, including GMRS folks doing exactly that. Google around for them.

Were you ever suucessful with your project on this? If so, I’d be interested in picking your brain.

The answer was yes, but the FCC closed down the GMRS “nets”.

You essentially create nodes with numbers under 2000 and then each member ends up putting the node listing of the “server” or all the other nodes in their extensions.conf, I believe (I didn’t do this part).
