BeagleBone Black Allstar Official Release

Hello and welcome to the first public release of Allstar on the BeagleBone Black. This represents months of trial and error testing which first started with the Raspberry Pi back at the beginning of the year and was finally successful on the BBB platform. We have had several beta versions out now for over two months with many testers and we had very good reports. There is more to be done but this is a working system that will allow many to get rid of their energy consuming PC’s with constantly running hard drives and have an Allstar system that fits in the palm of your hand.

The web page I have created gives very detailed instructions on how to download, install, and configure your BBB for use with Allstar. The web page is:

hamvoip.org

There you will find a link to download the image and also to join the arm-allstar email list. Please try to address questions specific to the BBB and Allstar to the arm-allstar list and not the apt-rpt list.

While the code is the current Acid release there are many differences in how things are done on the BBB and the OS we are using, Arch Linux, is much different than Centos or Debian. Please refer to the web page for detailed info on some of the differences. We also recommend that you NOT use the nodesetup routine that is offered on the standard Acid release. In many ways this is faulty and often more trouble than it is worth. For that reason we have renamed nodesteup on the image and made it non-executable. Besides what is described on the web page there is a very detailed how-to describing first time setup of the config files. We encourage you to edit the existing config files rather than wholesale copying your existing configs on top of the examples. There is a little learning involved but in the long run it is good to know how things work by configuring the files on your own.

We also encourage you to make image backups once you have your system configured. This will avoid having to recreate your configuration should a failure of some kind occur. While we have not seen any problems with power failures and as far as we know not one SD card has ever failed running Allstar there is always a first time and better safe than sorry.

This release does not have the backup/restore scripts that we promised but they will be available soon. Basically what they will do is copy /etc/asterisk and all directories under it in entirety into a tar file and then you would use winscp or a similar file copy program to transfer the tar file to another computer. This would allow you to make updates of the image when new code is released in the future without losing your former configuration. For now you can do this manually. See the howto on the web page for instructions on doing image and directory backups. It is not hard to do and well worth the piece of mind.

Have fun and I hope you enjoy your new BBB Allstar node. There will be many more features and upgrades available in the future all of which will be announced on the arm-allstar email list. There are already plenty of experienced users on the list that can help you with any problems you might have.

Yes, and the distro required on the SW side - I have a current node in test mode with an ‘old’ everex GPC, A.C.I.D. and URIx, I have an unused BeagleBone Black, so just wondering what else would be required to ‘glue’ a BBB based one together. I’ll check out hamvoip.org shortly and see what kernels (pun intended) of data it has

The distro is Arch Linux but this is a complete package, image download at the website. No additional downloads are required. You do not need to do anything but configure it.

It has quite sadly become painfully necessary to “Officially” and publicly state that
this release is NOT an “Official” Allstar release. It has not been sanctioned by
me or the Allstar network. It is something that this person is doing completely independently.

I am not in any way trying to infer that there is anything “right” or “wrong”, or anything else
about it, merely that is in an independent operation and I/we are not in any way responsible
for its contents and/or use.

You forgot "Not intended to treat, prevent or cure any disease"!

The solution is appealing to me, since use of a VirtualBox VM on my
existing PC doesn't seem to be practically feasible., and I don't need
another heat-generating physical PC in my office/shack at this time of
year. I've ordered a BBB to experiment with, without any expectation
of official support from the AllStar project (yet?).

The use of the term "Official Release" in the subject the email
announcement does seem a bit inappropriate, though...

I am not in any way trying to infer that there is anything "right" or

Thanks to everyone for the compliments I will ignore the naysayers. The word official was meant to mean Official of the BeagleBone Black differentiating it from the betas that have been floating around for several months. You can interpret it in any way you like. The bottom line is we are going off in a new direction and things probably won’t be the same in the future. If you like that then fine, come join us, if not then you don’t have to participate.

Hi Jim and everyone,

I think Doug probably meant "officially released" since we've had several
beta-test releases over the last 6 weeks or so.

I'm unfortunately not surprised by your comments, but, am disappointed.
As the father of the AllStar project, you should be grinning from ear to
ear that your baby has grown to the point that other developers are
helping to build *your* network without requiring any of your time.

I, for one, hope this isn't another fork in the road. I hope it's just
another step in the evolution of this already fantastic radio/repeater
control and VoIP solution you envisioned.

As a software developer and project manager with decades of experience,
one thing I've had to painfully learn is that everybody has there own
vision for how a piece of software or a system should function. You can't
stifle this creativity. Rather, you have to embrace it and direct it. If
the system works reliably, inter-operates (with AllStar) compatibly and is
being (pro)actively supported, then you smile and say: Good job guys! We
need this feature next! Or, how about finding a solution for that issue???

This shouldn't be a competition. Lets work for a common goal.

Subject: [App_rpt-users] BeagleBone Black Allstar Official Release

Hello and welcome to the first public release of Allstar on the BeagleBone Black. This represents months of trial and error testing which first started with the Raspberry Pi back at the beginning of the year and was finally successful on the BBB platform. We have had several beta versions out now for over two months with many testers and we had very good reports. There is more to be done but this is a working system that will allow many to get rid of their energy consuming PC's with constantly running hard drives and have an Allstar system that fits in the palm of your hand.

Hence my post after his and some of the other funny responses, I belive the Jim’s post was meant to be a positive one.

I have known Jim and the Allstar band of Indians since the early days of App_Rpt.

I like the fact that newer and more progressive ways of doing VOIP/ROIP or whatever we call this stuff we do with our repeaters, radios and other hardware/software - Fun.

So don’t take it the wrong way.

Some times you have to make weird posts to break the monotony of things,

I believe if Jim did not like what was happening he would have shut it down long ago.

Lets all have fun with whatever hardware/software makes it work and enjoy ham radio

Jim and Doug, some thoughts and questions.

Jim, I don’t know if you know much about the forking of Plan 9 into 9atom and 9front…? There was a quote from one of the fork developers to Bell Labs on the 9fans list - “Plan 9 has escaped the Labs…” This is not to say the forks are the representative of Plan 9, but they have their own developers and support systems. This is while peacefully co-existing with Bell Labs Plan 9 (9legacy). I mean, could they be rolled into the mainline? Perhaps. Could drivers from a fork be used in 9legacy? Perhaps. These are all possibilities for the future.

At the end of the day, these pieces of software share a common origin, in terms of code base, but don’t share support systems. I think Doug mentioned he has a list for the ARM version of AllStar? If so, us ARM people should migrate there.

Doug, I was wondering if your ARM release has similar support for RTCMs like the ACiD release of AllStar? I wish to use RTCMs as a voter network, this has never been a secret, but I suppose, realistically, the BBBs could become a sort of RTCM. Anyway, let me know what goes in terms of RTCMs - I think having a low power voting network would fit my needs rather well!

Many thanks guys!

Doug,

Just wanted to congratulate you on your efforts in porting Allstar to the BeagleBone Black. I just got my BBB board today and have a node up and running with no issues. Took me about 3 hours to set up, but mostly because I realized the BBB uses a microSD card, which I didn't have one on hand. I had to go to Walmart and get one because it is close and open at 9:30PM.

I am using the simpleusb.conf, which I have never used, but works fine.

The TI chip does get a bit hot, so I put a heat sink on it to help.

Yes, and the distro required on the SW side - I have a current node in test mode with an 'old' everex GPC, A.C.I.D. and URIx, I have an unused BeagleBone Black, so just wondering what else would be required to 'glue' a BBB based one together. I'll check out hamvoip.org shortly and see what kernels (pun intended) of data it has

Being a computer professional (+geek+electronics geek+ham etc) I might just replace my low power mac mini sized node with an even more small and power efficient unit - and besides I like hacking on linux and asterisk

Ramon,
Thanks for your kind comments and congratulations on getting your BBB up and running. I am amazed myself at the ease and speed of getting a node online once you have done it a few times. I think I can get a BBB node online in less than 10 minutes minus writing the sd card and acquiring a new server and node at allstarlink.org.
We have not had any heat issues but it is never a bad idea to dissipate heat especially when you run it in an area that has an elevated temperature.

Allstar Official Release

                                        Hello and

welcome to the first public
release of Allstar on the
BeagleBone Black. This
represents months of trial
and error testing which
first started with the
Raspberry Pi back at the
beginning of the year and
was finally successful on
the BBB platform. We have
had several beta versions
out now for over two months
with many testers and we had
very good reports. There is
more to be done but this is
a working system that will
allow many to get rid of
their energy consuming PC’s
with constantly running hard
drives and have an Allstar
system that fits in the palm
of your hand.

The web page I have created

gives very detailed
instructions on how to
download, install, and
configure your BBB for use
with Allstar. The web page
is:

                                        hamvoip.org

There you will find a link

to download the image and
also to join the arm-allstar
email list. Please try to
address questions specific
to the BBB and Allstar to
the arm-allstar list and not
the apt-rpt list.

                                        While the code is the

current Acid release there
are many differences in how
things are done on the BBB
and the OS we are using,
Arch Linux, is much
different than Centos or
Debian. Please refer to the
web page for detailed info
on some of the differences.
We also recommend that you
NOT use the nodesetup
routine that is offered on
the standard Acid release.
In many ways this is faulty
and often more trouble than
it is worth. For that reason
we have renamed nodesteup on
the image and made it
non-executable. Besides what
is described on the web page
there is a very detailed
how-to describing first time
setup of the config files.
We encourage you to edit the
existing config files rather
than wholesale copying your
existing configs on top of
the examples. There is a
little learning involved but
in the long run it is good
to know how things work by
configuring the files on
your own.

                                        We also encourage you to

make image backups once you
have your system configured.
This will avoid having to
recreate your configuration
should a failure of some
kind occur. While we have
not seen any problems with
power failures and as far as
we know not one SD card has
ever failed running Allstar
there is always a first time
and better safe than sorry.

                                        This release does not have

the backup/restore scripts
that we promised but they
will be available soon.
Basically what they will do
is copy /etc/asterisk and
all directories under it in
entirety into a tar file and
then you would use winscp or
a similar file copy program
to transfer the tar file to
another computer. This would
allow you to make updates of
the image when new code is
released in the future
without losing your former
configuration. For now you
can do this manually. See
the howto on the web page
for instructions on doing
image and directory backups.
It is not hard to do and
well worth the piece of
mind.

Have fun and I hope you

enjoy your new BBB Allstar
node. There will be many
more features and upgrades
available in the future all
of which will be announced
on the arm-allstar email
list. There are already
plenty of experienced users
on the list that can help
you with any problems you
might have.
