ASL3 Increasing Audio Bandwidth for Better Audio

I hope the SHARI folks don’t mind but…

I’ve not tried this, ymmv.

I’ve noticed ASL3 audio sounds better even without increasing the bandwidth. Saw a post over on AllStarLink Facebook group where users were noticing improved audio.

I enabled it on my 2 nodes but did not hear a difference. (I thought maaaaaybe the level was a touch "thinner" w more high freqs but was subjective and subtle if at all). Posted to that thread to say thx and as a question. The OP replied:

"Not much point now. The usbradio and simpleusb drivers filter out anything above 4 kHz. DAHDI has been removed, and the usbradio/simpleusb drivers are being redone to support alsa, so maybe we will have proper extended frequency response with ASL someday. For now, you'll only notice if you connect using non-ASL clients without radios that support slin16 or G722."

ALSA looks good though- Advanced Linux Sound Architecture- A complete guide of ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture 2026)

UPDATE- I tested today using DVSwitch on 2 different devices- between 2 ASL3 nodes w LIN16 enabled. I went back and forth on both DVSwitch testing uLaw vs LIN16 and to my ear LIN16 does sound a bit clearer but it is subtle.

I am reminded at how great an app DVSwitch is in all the data it shows you and how granular and easy it is to adjust settings. (I also noticed it shows private nodes and much more than the node pages/bubble charts on allstarlink.org shows and I'm curious why that is) Another note was that I had tested from the old iax software for Windows and realized not only did it not support LIN16 but it was set to GSM by default and sounded much worse than uLaw which I then set to be the sole codec to use in that app.
