[App_rpt] New guy with questions

Hi all, I have been monitoring the list for a while and read through some of the the archives.

I am thinking of taking the plunge into the AppRpt world.

Q1) I have a need to have an 8 port repeater controller at one site (local radios) with maybe 1 or 2 off site IAX links possible later.
Can a single Asterisk box perform as an 8 port controller?
If so, can it be done with 8 USB fobs?
I read some were that a system was set up with a USB hub and 7 Fobs.

Q2)Assuming system above is doable, what hardware would be required?
I have an IBM P4 3G with 1Gig of memory. I also have 2 USB 2.0 PCI cards to install for USB support.
Will this system do?

Q3) I went to the Allstar page to request a node number but have not received a response. for over 2 weeks.
Did I do something wrong? I filled out all the required info and it said Information uploaded. Does this mean the info was submitted?

Q4) There seems to be several USB Fobs out there, and some are supported and some look like the right ones but dont have the cm 108 chips.
Is there a list of known makes and models that are supported for AppRpt?
If not could this info be posted some ware so if one finds a source of the fob then the model could be checked before buying?

Q5) Can AppRpt support other audio interfaces like multiple Sound cards or IRLP interfaces.
I know it can use the IRLP interface as a radio interface.
Can it also support M AUDIO multiport audio pci cards?

Anyway that my first opening questions for my project.

Thanks for any help.

Jon,

Here's MHO,

Hi all, I have been monitoring the list for a while and read through
some of the the archives.

I am thinking of taking the plunge into the AppRpt world.

Q1) I have a need to have an 8 port repeater controller at one site
(local radios) with maybe 1 or 2 off site IAX links possible later.
Can a single Asterisk box perform as an 8 port controller?

## YES

If so, can it be done with 8 USB fobs?

## YES

I read some were that a system was set up with a USB hub and 7 Fobs.

## YES I've done that.

Q2)Assuming system above is doable, what hardware would be required?
I have an IBM P4 3G with 1Gig of memory. I also have 2 USB 2.0 PCI cards
to install for USB support.
Will this system do?

## The CPU has the power. It must be determined if the USB PCI cards
have enough bandwidth for the USB Radio Adapters. Some of them cheap
out and do not have independent Transaction Translators on each USB
port. The function lsusb and looking through the device file system is
the only way to see what you've got.

Q3) I went to the Allstar page to request a node number but have not
received a response. for over 2 weeks.
Did I do something wrong? I filled out all the required info and it said
Information uploaded. Does this mean the info was submitted?

## That's unusal. The sysops really do good work. It might be a spam
filter issue on your end.

Q4) There seems to be several USB Fobs out there, and some are supported
and some look like the right ones but dont have the cm 108 chips.
Is there a list of known makes and models that are supported for AppRpt?
If not could this info be posted some ware so if one finds a source of
the fob then the model could be checked before buying?

## Buy the URI at http://www.dmkeng.com. They are worth it.

Q5) Can AppRpt support other audio interfaces like multiple Sound cards ## No.
or IRLP interfaces. ## Yes via the chan_irlp module. No hardware required.
I know it can use the IRLP interface as a radio interface. ## No app_rpt cannot use the IRLP interface/hardware to connect to radios.
Can it also support M AUDIO multiport audio pci cards? ## No

Anyway that my first opening questions for my project.

Thanks for any help.

## Hope that was clear and correct enough to help. 73, Steven Henke, W9SH

For some reason the domain allstarlink.org is a problem for some ISP's.
(We don't know why this is the case, and we don't have the bandwidth to
actively track it down at this time) You are not the only one who has
not received a reply from allstarlink.org. The best thing to do in this
case is to check to see if your callsign is in the public node list on
allstarlink.org. If it is, then make a note of the node number and then
send an email directly to me if you haven't received your node number
and password in an email message within a few days of registering. I
will then send you your password.

<-- Ramesh, VA3UV: as a follow-up to Jon's posting, we've been trying
to source some additional USB fobs. I purchased mine from Tech Geeks
(as recommended in the USB sound fob modification paper), those guys are
apparently out of stock :frowning:

Perhaps (in addition to known makes and model numbers), folks could also
let us know where they purchased their fobs from!

On a related note, I've also noticed that there appears to be a lot of
DTMF falsing when using the fob (since it detects tones in the human
voice)... while this isn't really a problem since the DTMF codes are
sufficiently 'complex' for app_rpt, as we try to do more with our
app_rpt boxes and add features, DTMF executable scripts, etc., this may
be an issue in the future... just wondering whether this is being worked
on...

Cheers,

Ramesh, VA3UV
