I am currently using an AIOC with a Baofeng 5RM, along with a raspberry pi 3 running ASL3. I have flashed the 1.3 AIOC firmware and used G1LRO’s guidelines to emulate a CM108 sound card. With all of my settings updated I can receive signals on my Quenshang that is on the same frequency, and using Allmon3 I can force the node to connect with other nodes, but I cannot key up the node radio from my separate HT. I also get no input from my ht to my node when using dtmf on my quenshang.
I have attempted two different AIOC’s as well as two different raspberry pi’s but consistently get the same problem. The main part of my problem seems to involve:
When I use the CLI tune settings and select V) View COS, CTCSS and PTT Status, it shows
COS | CTCSS | COS | PTT
Input | Input | Out | Out
Clear | Off | Clear | Clear
It remains with these settings even when ht is keyed.
When I use Set Rx Voice Level using display I get no reaction from my ht BUT the rx level and more specifically the cursor will jump up and down the line. Whatever is causing this, seems to be my problem but I don’t know if it is more likely a setting issue, a hardware issue or possibly an RFI issue. I have dug through these discussion threads and adjusted settings every which way I can find and end up with the same result.
Same deal here. Losing my mind. AIOC, allstar3, pi5
Cannot get this to work. Have followed all the instructions repeatedly, including wiping the whole thing and starting over I have wasted about a week trying to get this to work. I don’t know what I’m missing.
Have you tried other radios? Baofengs have notoriously poor receivers and you could be desensitizing it with the other HT? You have both HTs on the lowest power settings? That's the only thing I can think of right off. Either that or your output audio is defective.
This is exactly where I was at but I was able to find a solution. (Although I’m still not convinced the baofeng is the best radio to run the node from.)
In all of the guides I could find from G1LRO and the two main youtube guides on how to set this up with the AIOC they have you flash the 1.3 software and then emulate the cm108 sound card. After several trial-and-error set ups re-flashing both the firmware for the AIOC and my ASL3 node, I tried skipping the firmware flash on the AIOC and leaving it with the newest 1.4.1 firmware, but still using the aioc1.3vcos.py to emulate the cm108.
After doing this I am able to TX and RX from my node. I am still having issues with my DTMF but can at least use the node with Allmon3.
Hopefully that makes sense and hopefully that helps!
I don’t have an AIOC myself. Was working with someone who does recently, and the only way we could ever get RX to work was by using vox in the usbradio driver, which is… not ideal, to say the least.
Then, after all that, because they’re using a Baofeng and a 12-bit DAC, sound was not great at best, after all possible optimizations re setting the level of the radio, and RX/TX in usbradio, etc.
I’ve never heard an AIOC-based node that sounded particularly good.
What i found was that RFI to the AIOC affects the keying of the UV5R
The first thing I did was to get hold of a few snap on Ferrite beads at the point where the AIOC USB connects to the UV5R.
That worked for some time but then I used an audio extension wire with 2.5 and 3.5 mm connectors + Ferrite snap-ons, from the rig to the AIOC, around half a meter away, did a reboot of the node and it keyed -on and off, as expected.
Had also commented out the AIOC stanza in res_usbradio.conf
The important lesson I learnt was to keep the AIOC a little away from the UV5R antenna.

The radio (whether it’s a kenwood or a baofeng) transmits absolutely fine. (The transmissions by ASL are clearly received in the other radios) It also receives, but the audio IN (RX) isn’t being passed from AIOC for whatever reason.
So far no one in thread has ack'ed that they are actually running minimum power. My Aursinc hotspot causes enough RFI to disable nearby USB ports at 1W.
Minimal output. Also, transmitting from a radio at lowest settings from another room.
The AIOC/Allstar node TRANSMITS just fine, with clear audio. Any radio that is attached to the AIOC interface will RECEIVE but ASL is doing nothing with that signal.
In the test menu, when adjusting the RX levels, there is NOTHING.
I don't have an AIOC. However if COS isn't keying, that's why there's no received audio. Either figure out why or, as others suggested, you have to use chan_usbradio with vox.
I believe that the AIOC cable's microcontroller is supposed to be simulating a COS on RX audio. How it does that, I do not know. I assume it's somehow processing the audio it receives and eumlates a COS. I would suggest asking the AOIC maker for any tips at this point because I think you're dealing with a hardware issue not an ASL issue.
I am fighting a similar issue; the flash works fine. In the dashboard, I can prompt the ID and time, but I have no PTT. The node worked perfectly with both the radios I have set up for it for the older version of AllStar. My settings are the same. I’m stumped!
