New user here, hopefully I’m doing this correctly.
I have a Shari Pi setup and functioning by following some videos from Ham Radio Crusader (and others). I’ve noticed when watching YouTube videos on setup, when the SSH into their node from the Allstar Link Web Admin Portal, and enter the terminal, it shows them logged into “callsign@ node12345.local… When I log into the portal, my User Name is “asl” plus my “password”.
Once logged in, my node shows as asl@nodexxxxx (x=mycall) instead of kf9af@nodexxxxx Apparently, during setup, I didn’t add or change something to create this asl login instead of my callsign is my guess.
I’m not familiar with Linex other than copying what someone is doing on a video, so any explaination needs to be at a very beginner level.
Before formatting the card, I just tried reimaging it and in step 13, the User Name prefilled with “asl”, apparently pulling it from the current SD Card image and would not allow me to change it, so…
I have reformatted the SD Card to remove the previous setup. When I get to Step 13, and click the box to Set User Name and Password, the User Name prefills with “mike” and Raspberry Pi Imager will not allow me to change the user name.
On the Raspberry Pi Imager "EDIT SETTINGS" window there are 3 tabs (General, Services, Options).
The "Services" tab allows you to choose from password authentication and public-key authentication. Since you are trying to set the username and password I'll ask if you have "password authentication" selected?
I just opened the Raspberry Pi Imager. In the OS Customisation Screen. under Services, Enable SSH is checked and YES - “Use passord authentication” is selected. This is per one of the YouTube Setup videos I followed. I must have followed a different video to setup a second node and that one DOES use my callsign to log into the Web Admin Portal.
Edit - I’m currently reading through the ASL 3 Appliance Installation. Under Step 22, it indicates login to the Web Portal as, “asl” for the User Name and step 23 shows being logged into “asl@node63001”. So this mioght be a standard when using Raspberry Pi Imager. I believe I followed Ham Radio Crusader to set up one node and he used Balena Etcher so there may be the difference in logins? Jus trying to learn how Linux works…
The ASL3 Manual / ASL3 Appliance Installation pages provide you with some guidance about how to setup your nodes. We are trying to be consistent about node numbers, hostnames, logins, etc. Clearly, your node number will not be "63001". For a login, we chose "asl" but you are most certainly welcome to use a name of your choosing ... like your callsign.
For ASL3, you most certainly should be using the Raspberry Pi Imager application. This allows you to configure the hostname, network configuration, and login info.
Note: Balena Etcher is one of the applications used to burn the HamVoIP image to an SD card ... maybe you were looking at an older video?
I understand my node numbers will not be 63001. I have two nodes configured, one currently running so I’m past that. Balena Etcher may have been an older video. I’ll stick with the Raspberry Imager.
Thanks for your assistance. Everything works so I won’t get hung up on the Web Portal Login difference.
