AllScan ANF101-M node install - Can't get the basics working

Good afternoon all. I’ve been trying for days to get my new Allscan ANF101 Full Duplex node up and running. I’ve installed and configured Debian 13, ASL3 and my node (attempted) from scratch 4 times on 2 different mini pcs with the same result.

I key my handheld. The COS led (yellow) illuminates but no ptt… nothing on the output. I pinged the vendor a few times and he’s punted me to this group.

A video of my ASL3 installation and node configuration can be found here (I’ve changed my password) - als3 install.mp4

The node configuration instructions I am following can be found here - AllScan - How To - Build a High-Quality Full-Duplex AllStar Node for Under $200

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide…

To add some background I had asked OP in an email, “Is ASL showing that it sees COS in the tune menu command that shows COS and PTT? If you command it to send test transmit (flash tones) from the tune menu does that work?” but Josh replied that wasn’t sure what that meant, and had been using ChatGPT which had come up with some “interesting” but not useful responses.

To elaborate on my question, you want to run asl-menu, which can be done by logging in by SSH and then running ‘sudo asl-menu’, and then run the tune menu option there. You will then see options to display COS and PTT status, and to transmit test tones. If you can post the results of those tests here that should help start to narrow down what’s going on.

Curious if you watched the video I did of the install. I’m sure I am missing a simple step.

Video - als3-troubleshooting.mp4

Output of command

The first link you posted asks for a username and I put the passcode you listed but it said that was not valid. Maybe you could post that video on dropbox or something not requiring an account/username? In the 2nd video you posted you did get to the utility showing COS status but it wasn’t clear if you keyed up the node at some point during that time. You tried executing some other menu commands but you had not yet exited the first menu utility so you weren’t actually executing those other commands.

Hi Josh, got your email, and that is strange that you got a message from the forum saying the post was flagged as spam and account put on hold. The post seems to showing fine so maybe you took care of that or it unflagged itself but I will email you also and if you’re still not able to get in I’ll ask the ASL team to look into that.

(update) I suggested running:
asl-find-sound
cd /etc/asterisk
grep '^devstr' simpleusb.conf
sudo asl-check-install

@n0eg, @NR9V I want you to know that I did take a took a look at the install video.

As to the asl-menu changes, when Josh used the cat command to look at the rpt.conf file I did see @ 6:07 the correct channel driver (rxchannel = SimpleUSB) in the per-node-settings at the end of the file. Later, I watched Josh making changes to the "template" settings towards the top of the file and not the "per-node" settings at the end. Changing the settings in the template will have the desired effect most of the time but one needs to remember that the "per-node" settings override those in the "template". The simpleusb.conf file also uses templates with the per-node / adapter settings at the end of the file.

@n0eg Do you have things working now?

Hi Allan, Josh’s account is still frozen, can you unlock it?

He did email and say that the channel driver seems to be enabled, and it seems he has all the right settings, so it’s currently a mystery why ASL does not seem to be seeing COS or setting PTT. I think he did say the URI status LED was blinking which would imply ASL is communicating with the URI. Well I’m sure we will find the cause soon enough.

Josh should now be able to post again

There's a throttle if you drop too many of the same links into a thread as a newer user as an anti-spam mechanism. I thought I'd cleared all his flags yesterday when this thread hit the filter. My bad on that.

Thank you all.

Happy to do a fresh image/new install to start fresh… I’ve tried / changed so many things now.

N0EG

The blue light blinks only when a local HT is transmitting to the node. About 3 seconds after I stop transmitting the blue led goes to solid… not blinking. I have not changed the USB port since imaging to PC. let me know if you want me to start fresh and record the whole thing (probably not debian install)

Thanks all! n0eg

Q? have you restarted / rebooted the entire system since you installed Debian? since you installed the ASL3 packages? since you make changes to the /etc/asterisk configuration files?

Can you :

  • reboot the system
  • login back in
  • check the asterisk log for errors
    sudo tail -200 /var/log/asterisk/messages.log

  • check if the node is functioning
    • if it's working, GREAT
    • if not, please describe what IS and IS NOT working

Rebooted the system… no change in status… Visually the Blue LED is solid. If I key a handheld on the rx freq the COS LED glows. Stops when I stop transmitting.

the dashboard shows it registered after the reboot.

n0eg@allscan:\~$

Based on the above you have a very messed up system. At minimum it looks like your filesystem is corrupted and you're missing the DAHDI kernel modules.

I would suggest starting clean from a fresh install and use only standard ASL3 tools to configure the node. Get that working and then you can add in other stuff like Allscan applications.

Hmmm... I wonder if the DAHDI issues are due to your PC having Secure Boot enabled. We have some information @ ASL3 Manual : UEFI and SecureBoot but the quick/easy test would be go to the shutdown the system, startup in the BIOS settings, disable Secure Boot, and then when booting back into the OS check if asterisk is behaving any better.

But there's other errors in that log too. Problems resolving hostnames, that segfault backtrace, etc. None of that is normal behavior. Speaks to a wider system corruption issue.

Thank you all for your help. I disabled secure boot, wiped and rebuilt the system. Same results. New Logs do look better??? see some DNS errors but the status screen shows “registered but not reporting statistical data”
