AIOC - RaspberryPi - Allstar Version 3. If you are having problems with the AIOC this is for you

Ok I am merely posting this so that maybe I can save you 2-3 days of troubleshooting if you have a problem with your AIOC.Trying to get allstar 3 up with an AIOC. All the posts I saw are a year old so I will be documenting it 100% in written form when I finally get it. For now this is about troubleshooting the AIOC if you cannot get it working. It is deceptively simple if it isnt working chances are it is easy to figure out why.

I purchased a RaspberryPi 2W. I also purchased the AIOC because I have plenty of HTs laying around including the Baofeng UV17R. I see people complaining about the AIOC not working well. I was going down that path too but I got to tell you the support I got from G1LRO was insanely good. I had a problem where my AIOC was not sending audio. It could hear but it could not transmit. If you choose to save 15 dollars and solder it yourself.

HEED their Warning about being careful soldering those two jacks.

I would recommend you take a before picture before doing any soldering. Luckily I did so I could see what it was when I got it.

Here is my before picture as I unpackaged the item. (You can see C13 is there)

and I took a picture proudly after I soldered it.

C13 is missing. (I did not notice it at the time)

Mine wasnt working. Turns out the problem was me. When I was soldering it I accidentally removed a Surface mount capacitor. Didnt even know it was missing. However the AIOC would NOT work. I read a bunch on it. Lost 3 days troubleshooting it and turns out the problem was me. G1LRO answered his emails within an instant. I was embarrassed that he replied that fast.

He showed me how to troubleshoot the device plugging it into windows and recording from it. He also told me to use it as a data cable to program a radio. Then he gave me another program to TRANSMIT with it using the PTT. That last part is what never worked. So I told him all this and he said "Send me detailed pics of the front and back of the AIOC." he says. I am not a professional solderer or any thing even above a light hobbiest in electronics I thought my solder job was pretty good. Turns out it wasnt. Here is what he sent me back.

So I started looking up SMD capacitors.. found there is a bunch of different sizes. I wanted to order one because I wanted to fix it.

He told me there is another capacitor on the board I can desolder and use that. So I mean just great help. I did remove that capacitor and put it in the place I lost at C13. The cable still wouldnt transmit. SMD soldering is serious business I am surprised I got it. Anyhow

I guess the post is for the AIOC you have to be REALLY careful if you are soldering it. Apparently that capacitor gets removed a lot and stuff is REALLY close to the places you are soldering. I ordered a second one ASSEMBLED this time from NA6D. I want this to just work.

Ill follow up but if you are having problems with the AIOC before you spend days on it. Compare your before and after photos for problems or just dont solder it and let them.

I think it is a great product personally. The support was amazing. Have to wait until July 7th for the new one.

The broken AIOC works great as a data cable so I guess it still has a purpose.

Anyhow hope this saves you some time if like me you are troubleshooting. I had a hell of a time finding information on this setup Allstar v3 a raspberrypi AND an AIOC. If you have any questions about this install and your searching led you here feel free to look me up. I am good on QRZ. If I save ONE person from spinning their wheels on this that will be a good thing. If I can help I will.
