TORUN – The Only Radio You Need
This is kind of nitpicky, but it's a personal pet peeve of mine; have you fixed the reverse-burst problem with PL and DPL, inherent in the SA-818 module's firmware? Nice case, BTW...
To NQ4T: Yeah, they are; while it's true, some brands of radio are beyond hope (Yaesu, many CCRs), the SHARI PiHat guy re-wrote his firmware to fix it on the modules he uses. The stock modules send the wrong frequency reverse burst and shutoff tone for DPL. The SHARI is dead quiet with Moto and several other commercial radios. In fact, he fixed the DPL problem specifically when I brought it up about four years ago.
As long as I'm on the topic, there's one other flaw with the stock SA818 modules; if they're idle for a period of time, they seem to go into a quasi-sleep mode where the first signal's audio sort of "ramps up" slowly. After that, it's perfectly fine, as long as it stays busy.
Why is something like DPL such an utter requirement on a device designed to largely cover your house? If it's for keeping your neighbors off; then all you really need is tone on the rx side of the module.
Also...are these radios relying only on one type of squelch? It seems to me if it's slow closing on carrier, and slow on ctcss...then that's a problem with the radio. If you need reverse burst to prevent carrier squelch delay....I feel that's a flaw with the radio. Any radio should be able to close it's squelch when carrier is lost with little delay; that's something that's been done for decades.
I guess my entire thing is that while...sure...it may be wrong; I don't see it as a real problem.
My FT2D....doesn't have this issue in normal CSQ mode.

As to your question(s), as a person who's mostly only used commercial radios for the past 35+ years, I cannot abide that awful squelch crash when people and repeaters unkey; I prefer that nice silent performance that I'm used to. Most equipment supports it properly these days, but several ham radio brands insist on dragging their feet on the technology.
As for the use case, I don't use these devices at home (mostly). I use more robust equipment and units like the SHARI are what I take mobile when I want to talk back to my friends in California.
